What is the best media player to play HD videos with?

By Videographer
Matt asked:

I am wanting to play video taken from an HD camcorder and play it in on my computer. Does anyone have recommendations for a media player which best displays videos originally recorded in HD. I have tried Windows Media Player and VLC media player. The original file type is .TOD and I am converting into MPG. Is this the best file conversion for maintaining as much HD resolution as possible or are other file types, e.g. AVI, less compressed? Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hey Matt,

You really need to get a video editing program designed for AVCHD, like Abode Premiere Elements 7. Also, your computer needs to be souped up to handle the HD files. PRE7, will allow you to save your projects in all the file formats.

.TOD file extensions are used by JVC hard disc drive camcorders. The .TOD files are modified MPEG2 (M2TS) files – use something like StreamClip to convert them to a useful format for playback

If you decide you want to edit the video, current versions of Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere for Windows… or iMovieHD (’08 or newer) or FinalCut for Macintosh.

Less compression allows better full-screen video quality.
